In a setback to the prosecution, the Bombay high court has granted bail to Raghuveer Singh, who was arrested in connection with the murder of his mother, Sandhya Singh, sister of music composers Jatin-Lalit.

While granting bail to Raghuveer, justice Revati Mohite-Dere observed that there was no "clinching" evidence against him. The judge also observed that the prosecution's case against him was based entirely on circumstantial evidence which was not sufficient.

The HC has granted him bail on a personal bond of Rs 50,000 on May 8. Raghuveer has, however, been restrained from leaving the city without informing the trial court. He has also been directed not to tamper with evidence or witnesses in the case.

"The prosecution case rests entirely on circumstantial evidence. There is no last seen evidence or evidence of recovery of any weapon or clothes at the instance of the accused. The only circumstances that are on record are that the applicant (Raghuveer) had strained relations with his mother," observed justice Dere.

The court further added: "The circumstances as they stand are neither clinching nor sufficient, prima facie, to show the complicity of the applicant. There is no material brought on record by the prosecution to show that the deceased was last seen in the company of the applicant."

Raghuveer was arrested on December 16, 2013 for allegedly murdering his mother Sandhya Singh, cutting her body into pieces, and then disposing of her bones in the marshes in Navi Mumbai.

Sandhya Singh, sister of yesteryear Bollywood actresses Sulakshana Pandit, Vijeta Pandit and of Jatin-Lalit, had gone missing from her house in NRI Complex at Seawoods in Navi Mumbai in December 2012.

In January 2013, human remains were found in the marshes 200 metres away from Singh's household. DNA tests proved that they were Sandhya's remains. Probe into the murder was transferred to the Navi Mumbai crime branch after the local police failed to solve the case.
