Almost a month after former deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal, prime accused in the Maharashtra Sadan scam, was granted bail by the high court on May 4, his nephew, Sameer Bhujbal, got bail on Wednesday. It is alleged that the duo got kickbacks for awarding the contract to build the Sadan in Delhi to a particular firm, and got the cash routed through shell companies floated by his family. They were booked for money laundering by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Justice Ajey Gadkari granted bail to Sameer, arrested by the ED on February 1, 2016, on a personal bond of Rs 5 lakh, with the conditions that he would not leave Mumbai without the trial court's permission and not influence witnesses in the case.

The bail was granted on the grounds of parity as Chhagan, the prime accused, is also out on bail. Sameer's defence was that even if found guilty under the charge levelled, the maximum sentence would be seven years, and he has already served one-third of that. He will be released from Arthur Road prison in a couple of days.
