Sambhaji Brigade, the Maratha youth organisation, is likely to merge with Peasant Workers Party (PWP). According to sources, the brigade has held several rounds of talk with PWP leaders recently.

When asked, Jayant Patil, general secretary of PWP, confirmed the development. However, he refused to reveal more details.

Sources said that discussion is on as to whether the entire organisation of Sambhaji Brigade should be merged with PWP or it should just be a tie-up like RSS-BJP.

"We have not yet finalised the fine print. But we will emerge as a main political force in the state. Most of the brigade leaders will soon join PWP. There is a total of 15 various Maratha bodies which are working under the brigade.

Actually, we do not want to dissolve the brigade's current structure, only our leaders will join and work for the party. We have been working in the social field for last several years, so we want to divert our social force into a political force," said senior brigade leader.

Source further said that PWP will be totally reorganised. "Former president of Sambhaji Brigade Pravin Gaikwad is likely to lead PWP, Maharashtra unit. Currently, there is no strong Opposition in the state and that void can be filled by PWP. Congress-NCP do not behave and even function like the the main Opposition," said senior a PWP leader requested anonymity.

When contacted, Pravin Gaikwad of the brigade confirmed the development. "All major political party leaders are involved in corruption cases. However, PWP is still a corruption-free party. Therefore, we chose to align with them.

We will raise the farmer and labour issues, besides focussing on the health and education sector. Once the decision is taken, the official announcement will be made soon. We will work to make the Maharashtra a progressive state socially and economically," Gaikwad said.
