Bollywood actor Salman Khan was not found at his home when a police team went to fetch him soon after the 2002 hit-and-run accident, said a police officer to the sessions court on Thursday.

Rajendra Kadam, first investigating officer in the case, told sessions judge DW Deshpande, while deposing as a prosecution witness in the hit-and-run case. He said that his team had gone to the actor's house soon after an FIR was registered against him in the early hours of September 28, 2002.

To a query, he responded: "His house was at Galaxy apartments, barely 200m from the accident spot." The FIR was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by constable Ravindra Patil, who was then Khan's bodyguard. He had said in his complaint that the actor was driving the car at the time of the accident.

Kadam said that he rushed to the spot soon after he received a call about the accident. When he reached there, the first thing he had to do was to rescue constable Patil, who was waiting at the spot, as he was being manhandled by an irate mob.He said: "I saw that a white Land Cruiser had rammed the American Express bakery and had climbed three stairs. It's number plate was lying on the spot."

Kadam said that he saw five persons "entangled and trapped beneath the car" when he reached the spot. One of them was dead. Of the remaining four, two were severely injured and two had sustained minor injuries. He also said that it wasn't possible to remove them without lifting the car with the help of a crane.

The injured were taken to Bhabha hospital, where two of the victims who had sustained minor injuries were discharged after preliminary treatment.

He further said that inspection of the vehicle showed blood on the left front tyre. He seized the car papers and keys, and labelled them.

During his cross-examination by Khan's lawyer Shrikant Shivade, Kadam said he arrived at the spot at 2.50am and conducted panchnama between 3.05am and 4.20am.

He also said that though the key was in the ignition, he did not try to start up the car at the spot or later at the police station. It was brought to the station with the help of a crane.Kadam's cross examination will be continued on Friday.

The sessions court on Thursday directed prosecution to produce Bandra police station's diary for September 27, 28 and 29, 2002. The court was hearing an application filed by actor Salman Khan in the 2002 hit-and-run case, seeking production of case diary.

"The station diary is not a privileged document. It notes the daily police movement. It is an official document which is proof of the events at a police station during 24 hours," Khan's lawyer Shirkant Shivade said.
