Actor Salman Khan’s lawyer Dipesh Mehta received a bouquet of flowers with a threatening letter and a live cartridge at his Bandra house on Monday.

The letter asked him to pay up Rs2 crore or face action. The Bandra police have registered a complaint.

According to the police, a man in this thirties came to Mehta’s office at Doop-Chhaon building on 28th Road, Bandra (West) around 1.30pm on Monday and handed a bouquet and a letter in an envelop to a staffer. Mehta was not in the office at that time.

“When the staffer opened the envelop, he found the letter and the live cartridge. The sender identified himself as Azad and has written ‘Dipesh Mehta 2 crore driver ke sath pahuncha do nahi to jaan se maar doonga’ (Dipesh Mehta, send Rs2 crore with your driver or I will kill you) ,” said a police officer. Mehta’s junior advocate Kaushal Kiran Thakkar lodged a complaint with Bandra police station.

“We have registered a complaint under sections 386 (extortion) and 506 (threatening with dire consequences) under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). We are questioning the driver because the letter has asked Mehta to send the extortion money through his driver,’’ said another police officer.

It was not clear whom the driver was supposed to hand over the cash to. The extortion could be the handiwork of Ravi Pujari gang which had adopted a similar modus operandi a few years ago to extort money from a Bandra builder.

On the builder’s daughter’s wedding, Pujari sent a bouquet to him.

The police are scanning the CCTV footage in the vicinity to identify the man who delivered the flowers to Mehta’s office.

The lawyer has represented several Bollywood actors.
