A couple who had run away from Uttar Pradesh and arrived in the city five days ago committed suicide in Vikhroli West on Wednesday. The two had fled their home state after their respective families objected to their marriage.
A couple who had run away from Uttar Pradesh and arrived in the city five days ago committed suicide in Vikhroli West on Wednesday. The two had fled their home state after their respective families objected to their marriage.
The police said Habib Khan (35) and his wife Faima (25) had rented a tenement at Tagore Nagar. It is believed that Faima had dumped her previous husband and left behind their children to lead a better life with Habib.
In the evening, locals spotted Habib hanging inside a latrine behind a cement shop where he worked as a mason. "When Habib's co-workers could not trace him for a long time, they forced open the toilet door only to find him dead," said inspector Sudhir Nigudkar of Vikhroli police station.
The policeman said when they went to his shanty, they found Faima's body. "She had hanged herself with a dupatta."
The investigators suspect that it was Faima who first committed suicide. Apparently, after finishing work, Habib had gone home for dinner and found that his wife had killed herself. He returned to his shop and ended his life inside the toilet, they said.
"When we made some enquiries with the neighbours, we were told that Faima was depressed as Habib had lied to her about his financial condition. She was also remorseful for leaving behind her previous husband and their children," said Nigudkar. He said Habib too became depressed after seeing Faima's body and decided to end his life.
The police have not recovered any suicide note from the two. The family members of Habib, who have been informed about the suicide, were on their way to claim his body, they said.
