In a series of exposes, Zee Media has shown how all is not well with the functioning of Shikshan Prasarak Mandali, which runs over 40 educational institutions across the state. The prestigious Ruia College too was in the eyes of a storm when a dna expose revealed that the college was charging excess money to students.

Sameer Gaikwad, a Ruia alumnus, has been gathering information from the college through Right to Information applications. Gaikwad had pointed out that there were many irregularities in the functioning of the college. The education department had asked south Mumbai education inspector BB Chavan to probe into it.

Chavan told Zee Media that had submitted his report to the deputy director's office for further action. His report has made it clear that Ruia College is charging extra money to students. The college has collected Rs3,000 extra from each science student, while for every art student, the additional amount charged is Rs1,500.

The officer's report makes it clear that the receipts for the above amounts have been given by the Shikshan Prasarak Mandali on its letterhead. Interestingly, Chavan, in his report, has mentioned that Ruia College did not cooperate during the course of inquiry.
