The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) plan to use two plots for the proposed extension building of Bhau Daji Lad museum came under fire on Tuesday with city corporators slamming the civic administration on the issue.

What is the BMC plan?
As reported in dna earlier, the new building will come up on an area measuring around 1.20 lakh sq ft, occupying two open plots adjacent the museum in Byculla. One of the two plots, having no reservations, is being used for playing activities by locals. The plan is to convert the plots into landscape gardens for the new building. Besides, a parking facility has also been planned beneath the proposed garden, meaning no space for children to play.

Who proposed a discussion?
Proposing the issue for discussion, opposition leader Devendra Amberkar said, "The museum is trying to usurp the plot under the guise of building extension. This will deprive people of the open space."
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's (MNS) group leader Sandeep Deshpande alleged that the civic body has already assured the Jamanalal Bajaj Foundation, which is managing the museum, of extending their lease. The NGOs current lease agreement with BMC ends in 2015-16. "The BMC has assured to fund Rs100 crore for the work. Municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte should have intimated the corporators about this," Deshpande said seeking to know the municipal administration's stand over the issue.
The Samajwadi Party, NCP, Shiv Sena and BJP too supported the issues targeting the civic administration.

What's civic body's reaction?
Responding to the allegations, additional municipal commissioner Vikas Kharage assured corporators that the administration will provide details regarding the work during the next general body meeting. "We will apprise the House members about details of the work during the next meeting in written," he said. Corporators, however, were not happy with the response, leading to ruckus in the House. Despite repeated attempts, Kunte remained unavailable for his version.
