The deputy regional transport office (RTO), Vashi, has started a special drive to crackdown on autorickshaw and taxi drivers who are not displaying their coloured-laminated photocopy of permit and license. The state transport authority had made this mandatory in July this year.

The drive, which started on December 3, will continue till December 10. The state transport authority had come out with a commuter-friendly regulation, making auto and taxi drivers more responsible while ferrying passengers. It made it a must for owners of public transport vehicles to display a coloured and laminated photocopy of permit and the driver's license.

The transport authority initiated this move after it received several complaints from commuters about bad services by auto and taxi drivers. And, then there was no system to track the guilty.

The RTO implemented the state transport decision strictly in its jurisdiction. However, it still received complaints that a few autorickshaw and taxi drivers are not displaying their license and permit.

If the auto or taxi drivers are found not displaying these documents, then the RTO will either suspend the permit for five days or fine Rs500.

Earlier, people could not find details of the auto or taxi they travelled in and so this move was taken. "Then, we were not able to take action due to lack of information," said Sanjay Dhaygude, deputy RTO, Vashi.

The authority had also made it clear that taxis can run maximum three shifts and auto two shifts. "This initiative by the authority is good as it made drivers more responsible. If people forget their belongings in the vehicle, it can be easily tracked down from now on," said Sudershan Bhagat, a commuter.
