On Friday, the Samta Nagar police arrested the fifth accused, Anil Waghmare, a Right To Information activist for allegedly planning and killing former Shivsena corporator Ashok Sawant.

According to the police, Waghmare is the brain behind Sawant’s murder. Police claimed that Waghmare was indulged in extorting money from the small time businessman in the locality. Waghmare also runs a civil services coaching classes, and wanted Sawant to give him space in his family run school to run it.

“Sawant not only asked the businessmen in the locality to not give money to Waghmare, but also denied space inside his school. This angered Waghmare and he planned the entire killing.” said a senior police officer.

Another accused Vishal Gaikwad, was arrested by the police for sheltering the accused after the murder was committed. Both the accused were present before Borivali court and they have been remanded into police custody upto January 18.

“The duo have been arrested and our team is on the lookout of the another accused Jagdish Pawar. We are investigating further.”, said Dr. Vinay Rathod, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 12.
