Anudanit Shiksha Bachao Samiti (ASBS), the NGO which had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) on behalf of parents of children who had failed to get admission under RTE Act, is upset with Bombay high court suggestion, as per which the state govt should give vacant RTE seats to the Open category.

Despite BMC conducting a third round of admission for children seeking admission under RTE's 25% quota, most of the students who have been allotted schools, are still waiting for schools to accept them, claimed ASBS.
The first round of RTE lottery took place on May 13.

According to the NGO, BMC did not advertise about RTE admissions. Initially it only conducted two rounds of RTE lottery. When ASBS approached the court, it declared a third round.

In the first round, many were allotted three to four schools, while some were allotted schools far away from their residence. There were also problems with the messages BMC sent to parents after their children's name figured in the lottery. Parents had to check the website to know which school their child had been allotted. Some children who had been allotted seats are still waiting to confirm admission as schools have not accepted them.

K Narayan, secretary, ASBS, said: "We are not happy with the court suggestion. Some schools have not accepted children despite s/he having BMC allotment letter. In the court, the govt claimed the committee under deputy director NB Chavhan had not received any complaints about children not having got admission. Education officers are not taking action against schools which are not confirming RTE admission."

Arundhati Chauhan, president, United Forum of Parent Teacher Association, said, "When the dept fails to implement RTE rule, we cannot blame just the schools."

One of the parents said: "I am waiting for my daughter to get her allotted seat. Authorities have asked me to meet them on Monday. Had we not approached the court, they would not have even entertained us."
