Just ahead of the polls, the state government has decided to provide financial assistance to the tune of Rs10,000 to destitute and single women for getting their girl child married. However, the financial assistance would be provided only to destitute and single women who have an annual income of less than Rs 1 lakh.
The scheme, which was in existence in rural areas, will now be extended to urban areas. The scheme was started eight years ago to provide assistance to Vidarbha widows.
“Though the scheme was meant to support women in Vidarbha, who were under huge financial burden in the form of loans after their husbands committed suicide, it was later extended to the rest of the state. All required approvals have been obtained. The file is before the CM and it should be brought in the cabinet by the end of this month,” said an official from the Women and Child Development department.
