The Kolhapur police announced a Rs 5 lakh cash award for anyone who provides information regarding the killers of communist leader Govind Pansare.

Meanwhile, a state-wide bandh called to protest the delay in nabbing the culprits got mixed responses on Sunday. The bandh, called by communist parties, was supported by the Congress, NCP and RPI (Athawale group).
Pansare succumbed to his injuries after being shot in Kolhapur on February 15 while taking a morning walk. Manojr Sharma, superintendent of police, Kolhapur, said, “Whoever shares details about Pansare’s killers will get Rs 5 lakh. We will also keep the names of those who provide information secret. We are confident that we soon nab the culprits,” said Sharma.

The Kolhapur police appealed to the people to contact them on 0974002274 in case they had any details. Security given to Pansare’s wife, one of the main witnesses in the case, has also been increased. “She has told the police that the people who killed Pansare spoke Marathi because they first asked his address,” said a police officer.

In Kolhapur, Solhapur and Aurangabad, most of the shops were closed down. Congress, NCP and communist organisations staged peaceful protests in these cities.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Manikrao Thakre said that the BJP-led government should nab the culprits before the people’s anger spills on to the streets. “If the government fails to take the action against extremist elements, more such incidents will happen,” Thakre said.

NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said that CM Devendra Fadnavis did not seem to be serious about the investigation. “He is not putting pressure on the police. It has been almost a week, but the police is clueless,” said Malik.
