In a bid to curb the hawker menace on railway platforms and on foot overbridges (FOBs), the Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel have been instructed to click selfies and take photographs in their assigned areas to verify claims that they have evicted unauthorised hawkers. The move is aimed at ensuring that RPF personnel do not turn a blind eye to hawkers after accepting bribes.

Senior RPF officers, meanwhile, held meetings with municipal corporations to address the issue of encroachment by hawkers. Commuters travelling on Western and Central Railways have often complained to RPF about hawkers occupying railway bridges, which pose obstacles during peak hours and lead to overcrowding. This has prompted senior RPF officers to direct their subordinates to report hawker-free bridges by visiting the location and clicking pictures from time to time and reporting it through Whatsapp.

"We are often blamed for promoting hawkers in the railway premises and are accused of accepting money from hawkers for allowing them to occupy the bridges for selling goods. This new move will ensure that strict action is taken on hawkers who illegally encroach the railway premises," said an RPF officer.

AK Shukla, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, RPF said, "We have also held meetings with different wards and neighbouring areas, and have sought their help. Moreover, real-time reports from our personnel give us an insight and ways can be devised to tackle them from time to time."

"We have been taking strictest action against such hawkers and making sure commuter's complaints are resolved," added Shukla.
