Railway staff have been struggling to remove the graffiti when coaches are cleaned in the railway yards
In addition to its regular duties of cracking down on trespassing on railway premises, illegal track crossing and unauthorised railway travel, the Railway Protection Force is now busy tracking down a miscreant who has been going around in Mumbai's local trains defacing compartments with the word 'Legend', using spray paint.
Railway staff have been struggling to remove the graffiti when coaches are cleaned in the railway yards.
One of the coaches vandalised with the graffiti is coach number 5216-A in the 9.33 pm Churchgate-Bandra slow local, and according to railway staff in charge of railway yards, the same graffiti has been seen in coaches of other trains too.
A Western Railway official revealed, "Lately we have seen that graffiti in trains have increased and have also informed the RPF to keep a track on the miscreants when the train is approaching the rail yards."
"We suspect that a group travelling in the train is regularly defacing the trains and the cleanup attendants are facing a tough time removing the paint", said the official.
Ravindra Bhakar, Public Relations Officer, Western Railway said, "We have informed the RPF to keep a watch on the miscreants, and if possible, to check CCTV cameras to track the persons involved in defacing the trains in Mumbai."
A senior RPF officer said, "We are keeping a watch to nab the miscreant and appropriate action will be taken against the person found defacing railway properties."
When contacted, AK Shukla, senior divisional security commissioner of RPF did not wish to comment.
DNA had reported on April 10 about a miscreant defacing walls in parts of Mumbai with the cryptic message "Bachna Hai Toh Aye Mere Dost, Aao Khele Mendicot (If you want to survive my friend, let's play mendicot — a card game)." Mumbai police has failed to nab the miscreant responsible for defacing a number of walls in the central and western suburbs.
"Our Social Service Branch is trying to trace the culprit, and we have learned that more than one person is behind the graffiti. We request people to report whenever they see anyone defacing the walls in the city," said a senior Mumbai Police officer.
