A 20-year-old Raipur resident, Sazia Khan, had Railway Protection Force constables Abdul Sheikh and BT Sangle to thank for saving her life on Wednesday. Khan alighted from a train that had not scheduled halt at Kalyan station but had just slowed down and in the process fell into the gap between the footboard of the train and the platform.

According to RPF officials, Sazia was travelling in the 22866 Puri- Lokmanya Tilak Terminus express which was moving at a slower-than-usual speed as it was moving past platform number 5. Sazia alighted from coach B2 and got pulled back by the motion of the train in such a way that she slipped into the gap of the train. The train had arrived at the platform at about 12:3-pm, said officials.

"The two RPF constables showed quick presence of mind with one of them holding onto Sazia's hand to ensure she doesn't slip down fruther into the gap. That would have brought her in contact with the wheels of the train and would have killed her. The commotion on the platform with people running towards the site of the incident also made the train slow down still further. That also helped Sazia. In the normal course, the train would have picked up speed to move towards Lokmanya Tila Terminus," said a senior RPF officer.

The two RPF personnel, Sheikh and Sangle were deputed at the station for anti-passenger luggage theft duty and as part of their routine were observing passing trains and people alighting from them, said officials.

Sazia was brought to the RPF post at Kalyan where a visibly shaken Sazia was consoled by RPF assistant inspector Deepali Singh. "She was fortunate and realised her mistake that alighting from a train before it comes to a complete halt is dangerous. Many people are not so lucky and could end up dead or worse with injuries that maim a person for life. It is a lesson for all passengers," said the officer.
