It's a moment of pride for everyone at the Children's Tech Centre in Thane. The group, which aims to imbibe scientific values and spirit in the minds of the children, is all set to enter a national stage on Monday.

A pair of 'robotic sandals', capable of generating high voltage at just few taps, by young students at CTC has been chosen for presentation at the Indian Science Congress (ISC) under 'Women Empowerment through information computer technology' hosted by the Mumbai University.

The project will be showcased before an audience of more than 15,000 scientists at the varsity's Kalina campus by CTC mentor Purshotam Pachpande and Dr Shraddha Ingle, visiting scientist to the Bhabha Atomic Research Center, on behalf of the students.

A beaming Pachpande said, "This gadget is the brainchild of our students and it was invented specially for the safety of the women post the Nirbhaya incident. It has received overwhelming response from everyone and was a big inspiration for our kids who made many gadgets after that."

The not-so-ordinary footwear has a 'black box' which records all incidents at a particular spot. If an user taps her foot two to three times, the electric circuit get activated and generates high current. It can then be used as a powerful weapon against an attacker.

Pachpande said their selection for the science Congress will be a big morale boosters for their students, who are already very creative and keep designing many unique gadgets.

The robotic sandals will also displayed along with several projects by many renowned scientists at an exhibition at the MMRDA grounds. For the young brains at CTC, they can't barely hold their excitement till Monday, for they will get to meet one of India's greatest scientists – Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
