A gang of robbers assaulted group of four friends and tried to steal phones and money at gunpoint in Chembur, late Sunday night, before they were caught by a police patrol.
Two of the three robbers were held after a short chase, but a third escaped and the Nehru Nagar police are looking out for him. They identified the three as Arvind Ashokan, Shanmugam Mudliyar and one Govind.
The friends were returning from a movie in Bandra and after getting out of an autorickshaw they were walking down the street to their hotel when the robbers stopped them, according to a complaint by Lalmani Prajapati.
Prajapati, 20, is employed with a cargo company. His friends were staying at the hotel.
"The four persons were walking towards the hotel when they were accosted by the three accused. The trio quizzed them about a theft in a nearby shop. Prajapati and his friends denied any knowledge about it and three started assaulting them," said Suresh Bhavar, senior inspector.
One of the accused dragged Prajapati to a corner and threatened them with a gun and tried to rob them of their mobile phones and cash of Rs10,000. When the three accused were about to escape from the spot a police team passing by in a jeep heard the commotion and chased the robbers.
"Police sub-inspectors Santosh Tapase and Kiran Koshti heard Prajapati's voice and chased the accused. They caught two of them, Arvind Ashokan and Shanmugam Mudliyar," Bhavar said.
The police believe that the gang was also involved in robbing a doctor at Kurla junction on Friday night. The doctor was waiting at a bus stop when two men on a motorcycle threatened him and robbed him of some valuables.
