In a disturbing incident late on Thursday night, a robber was caught while trying to break into a shop at Valiv phata. But he was released within a short time and returned to threaten the shop owners.

The Valiv police said a couple, Mahadev and Sunita Giri, who owned the shop, were disturbed from their sleep by some noise.

When they realised that robbers were trying to break in, they got out and managed to catch one of the two. They handed over the man, Rahul Bhise, to cops who were on patrol in the area.

The police apparently let off Bhise after a warning and to the utter surprise of the shop owners, he returned to the area and attacked them with stones.

"He even threatened to use acid against us if we went back to the police. We were surprised that the cops let the robber go," they said.

Narayan Patil, senior inspector, Valiv police station, said they had registered a case of assault and were looking for the man.
