The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will soon speed up road repairs and resurfacing works after receiving assurance from Thane Collector for temporary help of supplying stone chips to complete ongoing road works before the monsoon.

The BMC has taken up repair work of nearly 580 roads in the city but was hit by a roadblock due to unavailability of stone chips for the past few days. However, the civic body is confident of completing the work on time keeping in line with the earlier schedule.

Important roads like Senapati Bapat Marg, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road near Parel bridge, the road outside Siddhivinayak temple, stretch between Raheja Signal and Santacruz police station, N M Kale Marg in Dadar, Kurla Kamani on LBS Road, Madamme Cama Road, the road leading from Sion to Dharavi, Tata Hospital to Bhoiwada, and road near Wadala bridge were taken up for work but were not completed. The delay has led to traffic jams along these roads.

Civic sources claimed that the Thane collector would give informal instruction to three quarries to supply stone chips to the contractors temporarily. "This arrangement should help us get through difficult times," said a senior civic official.

BMC contractors have stalled work of road repairs and resurfacing citing unavailibility of stone chips from the quarries due to suspension of activity at over 70 stone quarries in Navi Mumbai. Thane Collector Mahendra Kalyankar had ordered suspension of all activities at quarries after National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordered for the same.

Overcoming roadblocks

Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis over the ban on quarrying in Navi Mumbai, which has affected the supply of stones for roadwork in Mumbai and surrounding areas. Thackeray told reporters that Fadnavis had spoken to the Konkan divisional commissioner and asked him to take legally tenable steps.

He pointed to how the ban on quarrying had affected the works of civic bodies like the BMC and the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and also that of infrastructure corporations like the MMRDA and MSRDC.
