Taking a tough stand against civic engineers helping contractors involved in road scam to evade criminal action, embarrassed municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta has recommended stricter action against the guilty officials.

Engineers kept their seniors in the dark about their move and embarrassed them when the police shot a letter in this regard. Civic sources said that the civic chief has asked the additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh in a meeting which lasted until late evening on Monday, that civic engineers will have to pay the price for their deed.

The issue is likely to be raked up in State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis sought all details of the inquiry from Mehta, who rushed for the meeting late in the evening to brief the CM.

Last week, the engineers from the roads department of the BMC helped the contractors to pay fine through demand draft to avoid action in the high court. At least three out of six contractors have managed to escape the arrest citing the payment of the penalty amount as demanded by the civic administration.

The issue came to the light when the senior officials of the BMC who are in charge of the inquiry received a letter from the investigation officer of the police department. The letter explained that the civic engineers have helped the contractors to pay up the penalty showing which the contractors could seek the bail from the court.

Civic sources claimed that the engineers involved in the latest act may face departmental inquiry and suspension. "They were served notice and the report on the basis of their replies was discussed in the Monday evening meeting with the municipal commissioner. Upset civic chief has recommended stricter action against the engineers," said an official.

Interestingly, none of the three contractors disputed the penalty amount demanded by the engineers of the roads department and paid the amount through demand draft. The copies of the same were presented in court on the basis of which the bail was granted. However, the contractors who could not pay the penalty did not get the bail and was sent to police custody.

Meanwhile Sandeep Deshpande, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena party leader in the BMC, and Dilip Lande, senior MNS corporator led a delegation of all MNS corporators and submitted a letter to the municipal commissioner demanding stricter action against contractors.

"The civic engineers are showing leniency with the contractor and this will go against the action taken by the civic chief who has already filed an FIR. BMC should demand the police department to speed up the investigation," said Deshpande after submitting the letter.
