In a strange turn of events, two months after a father-daughter duo met with a road accident that led to the death of the daughter, her father has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Bharat Singh, 42, father of the deceased 24-year-old Bharti Singh, was charged under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code at Kolshewadi police station on February 2.

The other charges he is facing are included under IPC sections 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 279 (rash driving), and Motor Vehicles Act 184.

On December 7, Singh was dropping his daughter to Vitthalwadi railway station around 8 am on a two-wheeler, when a four-wheeler raced past them at close quarters. To avoid a collision, Singh veered way from the car but ended up hitting a boulder and falling over. Bharti received deep injuries to her chest as she hit the divider, and both her legs were broken.

It was a while before some passing autorickshaws stopped and took them to Shivneri Hospital. While Singh was discharged, it was decided to shift Bharti to KEM or Sion hospital. But she succumbed to her injuries on December 9 and the Kolshewadi police was informed. On December 27, an accidental death report (ADR) was lodged after which investigations started.

On February 2, the Kolshewadi cops lodges a complaint against Singh as he was the one riding the bike.

Singh told dna, “I have given all necessary documents to the police station. If they take any step against me, it will be disturbing to my family. Already, we are very tensed."

About the incident, he said, "Normally, my son used to drop my daughter, a fashion designer, in the morning and i would ick her up from Vithalwadi station in the evening, but that day, I went to drop her and we met with an accident. It was not my fault, but of the four-wheeler's. As we fell, I also got hurt and was unable to take down the vehicle's number. It was morning hours and no none was around to help me take it down either."

"We were going to arrange her marriage this year," Singh said.

A Vitthalwadi police official said, "The accused stays at Mahadev Nagar in Vitthalwadi, Ulhasnagar, but the accident occurred on a highway road called Punalink Road, Khadegolavli, Kalyan, which comes under Kolshewadi police's jurisdiction and so the case was lodged there."

V K Hire, investigation officer, said, “We have registered an ADR and on the basis of investigations, we have lodged a case against the father as he was riding the two-wheeler.We have asked him to come to the police station for the statement and he said he would come by evening."

He added, " The case got registered late perhaps because the papers from the hospital were delivered to the police station late, which caused a delay."
