Residents of a Bandra (West) locality were allegedly threatened and intimidated on Saturday night by the staff of a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation-appointed road contractor while carrying out road resurfacing work in the area. A non-cognisable offence was registered the next day at Khar police station.

It all started when residents staying in the lane adjacent to Waterfield Road questioned the contractor's labourers for carrying out road repair work at such odd hours and asked them to show if they have BMC's permission for the same.

"When we saw heavy vehicles outside our homes so late, we went down and asked the contractor to show if they have the BMC permit, to which they said they don't," said a resident, Vandana Shah.

Shah alleged that the men carried on with the work even after failing to produce a permit. "When I questioned them further, they threatened me, saying they would run the roadroller on me if I didn't budge and let them continue with the work," she added.

Residents also said during the work the men knocked down an electricity pole. "Instead of lifting it up and making efforts to undo the damage, they were indignant and carried on with their work," Shah said, adding that the work had been going on for the last 10 days, even though it was supposed to have gotten over in a week.

Assistant municipal commissioner of H-west ward Vijay Kamble denied giving permission for the work late in the night. Other officials, however, said at times late night work is allowed considering it is difficult to do it during the day because of heavy footfall and traffic.

BMC sources said not only will the contractor have to fix the pole but also pay a fine of about Rs25,000-Rs30,000.

"We have charged two people, who had got into an argument with Shah during the work, and also taken action against the contractor," said constable Tushar Chavan of Khar police station.
