Statistics have revealed that 38,000 people lost their lives in the past three years, that is from 2015 to 2017, due to road accidents in Maharashtra. In a total of 1.39 lakh accidents, 1.7 lakhs people sustained injuries. Yet, surprisingly, the data provided by additional director-general of traffic, Maharashtra, shows that fatal accidents decreased in 2017 as compared to the years 2016 and 2015.

Statistics show that there were around 13,212 accidental deaths in the year 2015 and in 2016, this number dropped down to 12,883. The number of accidental deaths further dropped to 12,264 in 2017. Similarly, the number of road accidents have also dropped significantly. Compared to the 39,800 accidents reported in 2016, the year 2017 witnessed 35,800 accidents.

Number of fatal accidents reported in Mumbai too have reduced by 28% in the year 2017. While a total of 529 fatal road accidents were reported in the city in 2016, 2017 saw a drop down to 490. Along with these, 14 drunk driving cases were reported in 2016 and 11 in 2017. Authorities have attributed this fall to enhanced enforcement of road safety rules and awareness campaigns run by the state through street plays and lectures organised on road safety.

"I think the decrease in the number of road accidents is because of the awareness to in-lane crossing and cutting. These are the main reasons for accidents on highways and we have been continuously working on it. The number will decrease more in the future and efforts are on to achieve it," said RK Padmanabhan, additional director-general of police (traffic) Maharashtra. Most of the accidents take place on the highways during the wee hours and due to compromising lane cutting and crossings with over-speeding. Lane cutting is main reason for accidents without indicators.
