The surveillance of Konkan Railway's (KR) scenic stations with the help of Close-Circuit Television cameras has helped the Railway Protection Force make it the finest year when it comes to nabbing bootleggers and confiscation of smuggled liquor bottles. During 2016, the RPF unit on KR arrested 32 bootleggers and confiscated 6830 bottles of liquor worth Rs 526382. This is higher than the 12 bootleggers its caught in 2015 and the 3936 bottles of liquor worth Rs 2.68 lakh that was confiscated in 2015.

Speaking to DNA, KR RPF inspector-general AN Sinha confirmed that the CCTV surveillance was helping a lot. "One of the prime stations where CCTV surveillance is helping us nip this liquor smuggling menace right at the start is Madgaon station. Taking advantage of the difference in excise rates on liquor in Goa, bootleggers and smugglers try to bring it into states like Maharashtra. Keeping a watch on such activity through CCTV, we manage to nab these people. The fact that now other stations on the KR route also have CCTV means the fight against anti-socials using KR trains to smuggle liquor is that more effective," said Sinha.

It was in October, 2016 that 17 big stations on KR got CCTV systems. Before this, only Madgaon and Thivim stations in Goa had CCTV coverage. Each of the 17 KR stations has between 12 to 16 numbers of Fixed Dome type and Fixed Box type of cameras with Network Video Recorder (NVR) having a recording facility for 30 days. The cameras will cover the station entrance, lobby, platforms, ticket booking counters and other passenger areas. One 21 inch LED monitor each is provided at nine Railway Protection Force outposts for security monitoring of these stations.

The control room has been made operational at Madgaon, KR's primary station, with 19 numbers of 42 inch LED monitors. The CCTVs are supplementing the RPF staff which at 139 personnel is grossly inadequate for a network that is 740 km long and sees 122 mail and express trains plying on the route every day.
