In an alarming trend, the number of rape cases registered where the victims were minors has gone up as compared to the last year. According to data provided by the Mumbai Police, as many as 287 such cases were registered between January and October 2014. However, in 2015 for the same period, the cases where minors were exploited has gone up to 352.

Now, the two recent cases — three teachers allegedly raping a nine-year-old student and four teenagers raping their classmate and circulating the video on the social media — have raised a huge question over the safety and security of the kids at schools.

On one hand, some education experts feel that installing the CCTV cameras in every corner of the school may prevent such incidences, while on the other some parents and parents bodies feel that sex education should become an integral part of every school.

Prashant Redij, Mumbai president of Maharashtra Permanent Unaided Schools Association, said: "I feel that installing CCTV cameras in every corner of the school might prevent such incidents happening on school campuses. Also, if the parents are more friendly with their children, then a child will easily open up with them if any untoward incidences happen with them."

Jayant Jain, president of All India Federation of PTA, said: "At the time when Vasant Purkhe was the education minister, there was lot of opposition of parents to introduce sex education in schools. Even I opposed the idea. But today, I feel that it is the need of the hour. The schools should start imparting sex education, along with the pros and cons of using social media."

Echoing similar sentiments, one of the parents of central suburb school, said: "My daughter recently went to a workshop conducted by an NGO that works on Child Sexual Abuse (CSA). There they taught all the children on how to prevent sexual abuse. This has helped me a lot as my daughter has become more alert. She got to know about good touch and bad touch. I feel such awareness programmes should happen in every school of the city."
