There was a face-off between ruling Shiv Sena and the Opposition on Friday during the general body meeting of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on the rise of Swine Flu (H1N1) cases in the city. While Opposition blamed civic administration for rise in H1N1 cases, Shiv Sena backed the civic administration and suggested that the opposition should ask their representatives to spread awareness in their respective areas.

Ravi Raja, Congress corporator and leader of Opposition moved a notice of motion on the rise in swine flu cases in the city. He said it is surprising that swine flu cases were reported in May, but the civic health department did not pay attention to it. "Had the civic administration looked into the matter in time, we would have controlled it," said Raja. He added that apart from swine flu, cases of tuberculosis, malaria, and dengue have also shot up this year.

According to civic health department, a total 313 cases of swine flu was reported in June, and 166 cases till July 9 in the city. And, a total 16 deaths have been reported due to swine flue in the city.

Sheetal Mhatre, Shiv Sena corporator from Dahisar said the civic administration has been working to prevent tuberculosis, malaria, and dengue cases in the city. "We should appreciate their effort, and in fact, there is a need to create awareness among residents," she said.

She said that raising fingers on administration on such issues is an annual affair of the Opposition. Her statement did not go well with the opposition who created ruckus in the house.

However, Mhatre supported her statement by giving number of cases that dropped from last year. She said that number of dengue cases reported in June 2017 is 31 while last year it was 48. Similarly, in the first week of July 2017, 31 cases were reported while it was 48 in the same period the previous year. Even cases of malaria have gone down this year as compared to last year. In June 2016, the number of such cases was 583 while this year, the number is 130.
