With a series of steps taken by the government that are being perceived to be 'against the interest of the Muslim community', a welfare organisation has prodded the minority members to look for 'secular options'.On Saturday, the community received a series of suggestions to improve their living conditions, without relying overly on minority-specific ones.

What welfare measures were spelled out?

All India Muslim Other Backward Classes Organisation (AIMOBCO), which works for the welfare of backward communities, listed out a series of schemes and scholarship measures that members can trun to. These include free driving lessons for members of the OBC community, remuneration to widows, loan facility, scholarship for education and health scheme among others.

Many schemes to improve their lot, says community leader

"Most Muslims do not know about the schemes they can avail of. They only know of Maulana Azad Minorities scheme. When they were not granted 5% quota by the government, they felt the doors were closed. What we want to tell them is that there are many schemes through which they can improve their lot. There are many schemes they can avail of due to their status," said Shabbir Ansari, national president of AIMOBCO.

What will be the organisation's role?

Emphasis was also given on creating a movement surrounding these measures so there is more awareness among community members, who can be helped in receiving such benefits. During the meeting, speakers also asked the community to not keep blaming everyone else for their ills. "Political leaders are only interested in politics. We'd like to act as a bridge connecting Muslims to various schemes. Our role will not be just to create awareness but also to ensure that people get the benefits," said Ansari. He added, "One should be very strict with bureaucracy because they are the most casteist, and one gets the most resistance from them."
