It was an impulsive decision; something that came out of a desire to give back to society that prompted Mumbai-based businessman, Neville Wadia, to embark on a journey with a difference.

To raise awareness about the plight of people suffering from cancer and to support the activities of Health Awareness Centre (HAC), a corporation in Mumbai that runs a recovery centre to treat terminally ill cancer patients, he has been cycling solo on his expedition, Ride for Cancer, covering over 1,000 km from Bangalore to Mumbai.

He is even raising funds for the organisation by getting people in his network to donate money for the cause. “This centre caught my attention because they treat cancer patients only with diet and exercise, no drugs and no
surgery is involved. They need funding and publicity to treat the needy,” says the
28-year-old.

Having started the journey on December 13, Wadia is already on the verge of accomplishing his mission. He rides an average of 100 km a day, stopping every evening at a town along the way. But what stirred up the wish to do something of this sort?

“I had been travelling all around India in search of the true meaning of my existence, apart from the humdrum 9-to-5 lifestyle,” he says. “Cancer is a cause that I have always felt for. I wanted to do something out of the ordinary so it would turn heads, get people’s attention and make them take notice of the hardships and suffering that cancer patients and their family face every day.”

There have been physical and psychological challenges. With just his bicycle and a backpack containing a few essentials to keep him company, Wadia has no pursuit car or TV crew along with him. However, he does like to believe he is not alone in this noble endeavour.

To let many others partake in his escapade, he has been posting regular updates on Facebook and on his blog too. It has already fetched him a flood of responses.
