Revaluation: 50% of diploma students see marks change

Nearly 50 per cent of the candidates who applied for re-assessment of marks for their diploma (winter 2017 exam) saw that their marks change, mostly for the better, as per details provided under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. The data was provided to a parent, Anis Khan, who had sought details of the number of cases in which marks have changed post re-assessment.

As per the information provided to Khan, of the 5,018 applications that were made, in 2,297 cases, the marks were changed. Most of them changed upwards by up to nine marks. In case of 2,721 cases, there was no change in the marks.

Khan had sought the details from the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE), after his own son did not get as many marks as he had expected in his diploma exam of electrical engineering. He had also applied for re-assessment in case of his son's papers.

Khan was denied the request until the state information commission (SIC) stepped in and directed the Board to provide him with details of answer sheet post reassessment. When he got the papers after the SIC order, he got to know one of the papers had a totaling mistake.

"I do not understand how do they correct the papers. Students sometimes take drastic steps if they do not do well," said Khan.
