A year after dealing with an unprecedented delay in declaring results in 2017, things to be moving in the positive direction for the University of Mumbai over the last few days with several pending tasks being streamlined.

After the appointment of its Vice Chancellor Dr Suhas Pednekar in April this year, the office of the governor appointed Dr Ravindra Kulkarni as a full time pro-VC at the varsity. Earlier in June, the varsity also gave permanent charge of the post of Director, Examinations and Evaluation to Dr Arjun Ghatule.

With the posts of three key office bearers being occupied, insiders say that decision-making would be better as compared to what it was over the last few years amid frequent changes of heads. The state government also appointed a committee to audit over 700 affiliated colleges of the varsity to check on their infrastructure, teaching quality etc.

The varsity also seems to have come a long way when it comes to the much criticised Onscreen Marking Process(OSM) which it introduced under Dr Sanjay Deshmukh in 2017. "This year the assessment process was more or less smooth and teachers did not face much trouble. The university should ensure that it now works on bringing some permanent reforms in the processing of results which sometimes takes a lot of time" said a senior faculty member from the varsity. Next week, the varsity would conduct a meeting of college principals to decide what can be done to complete the pending assessment work.

In order to solve the issue of vacant teaching positions, the varsity has started the process for appointing over 150 temporary assistant professors at its various departments. "Since the government has set a hiring freeze these posts have been lying vacant for several years. If they are atleast filled on a temporary basis, it would benefit students" said a varsity official.
