The Nagpada police claims to have cracked the murder case of a 44-year-old Chinese eatery owner with the arrest of two suspects, one of whom owed Rs20 lakh to the victim that he did not want to return. The victim's throat was slit late in the night on Wednesday near railway officers' guesthouse in Nagpada.

According to the Nagpada police, the victim, Riyaz Hussain Qureshi, was known to one of the accused, Sajid Chaudhary. A few months back, Chaudhary, who dealt in second-hand cars, had taken a loan of Rs20 lakh from Qureshi.

"Qureshi had given the money to Chaudhary for some business-related work and had been demanding it back as he wanted to invest it in some other business interest of his," said deputy commissioner of police (DCP Zone III) S Jayakumar. He added, "Both Chaudhary and Qureshi had a scuffle over the money a few days back. Qureshi had issued an ultimatum of April 15 to Chaudhary to return the money."

However, Chaudhary, unable to arrange for the money, decided to kill Qureshi and end the matter once and for all. He sought the help of one Mohammed Salim alias Kulfi. "Salim was allegedly promised Rs20,000 for the job Chaudhary was going to give him," said DCP Jayakumar.

He further said, "Last night, Qureshi shut down his restaurant and was on his way back home on his motorcycle, when Salim stopped him and asked for a lift. An unsuspecting Qureshi did not think twice before agreeing," said Jayakumar.

As the duo reached near the railway officers' guesthouse, Salim asked Qureshi to stop the bike. When he did, Slaim slit his throat and fled the spot, leaving the body on the road. The locals spotted it and informed the police.

"We formed three teams to crack the case, and came to know about the tiff between Chaudhary and Qureshi over money. There were some technical evidence which pointed a finger of suspicion towards Chaudhary," said DCP Jayakumar. He added, "Once Chaudhary was arrested we were able to nab Salim too."

The Nagpada police has booked Chaudhary and Salim under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
