Thane residents can now have some respite as their water woes are getting addressed one after the other. After the railways allowed TMC draw water from Dighe dam, the water resource department has agreed to supply 35 MLD(million liters per day) water to Thane district.

The water crisis which brought the entire Thane region on its knees in the past three months, finally seems to be resolving. In a meeting held on April 26, the water resource department has agreed to allow TMC (Thane municipal corporation) to draw 35 MLD of water. "The decision was taken in a meeting held between the TMC and the water resource department at the URTC (urban research center) at Thane on Wednesday," says Sandip Malvi, public relations officer, TMC.

The TMC has agreed to draw 35 MLD from Bhatsa dam at its own expenditure out of which 10 MLD will be for Thane, 9 MLD for Bhiwandi, 8 MLD for Ulhasnagar, 3MLD for rural Bhiwandi and 5MLD for Mira-Bhayander.

This news has been applauded by Thanekars who are reeling under a 60 hour or three days a week water cut. "We were expecting things to worsen in April and May but it looks like things are going to get better," says Ramesh Patil, resident of Kalwa.

This is good news for all Thane residents as in mid-April, TMC was hoping to impose more water cuts. "With water levels being very low in Baravi dam, we wanted to impose more water cuts so that the current water would last till July 15. However, this supply from Bhatsa of 35 MLD will now make us reverse our decision," says a TMC official from its water department.

Thane city receives 470 MLD water from MIDC, STEM, BMC and TMC everyday. On April 25, the central railways had allowed TMC to withdraw water from Dighe dam for the next two months.
