A year and half after the 135-year-old Hancock bridge was demolished by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), there has been no development on the construction of the new bridge that was to replace it. The reason: the matter is at the Supreme Court and unless a decision comes, the construction cannot be undertaken.

Demolished in November 2015, the railway overbridge connected Byculla and Dadar.

The delay in construction of a new bridge in its place has been creating a lot of problems for residents of three to four major areas, who have now decided to take the matter to court.

On Sunday, residents under the banner of Hancock Bridge Nirman Committee (HBNC) held a meeting, which was attended by residents from Dongri, Noorbaug, and Mazagaon among others. "We have formed the committee to take the matter to the Supreme Court and State government for starting the construction of the much-needed bridge," said Aaamer Sayeed, one of the members of the committee.

Sayeed said that the committee will approach SC to intervene in the matter. "Since the matter is pending with the court, our only option is to approach the court," he said.

However, the committee is also planning to hold mock rally to submit their protest. "We will soon hold the mock rally against the unnecessary delay, and will also want to inform city residents about the delay," he added.

At present, pedestrians and motorists have to take a longer route to the cross the railway track. "In the last six months six people have died while crossing the railway track," Sayeed said.

Even in March 2016, the Bombay High Court had directed the BMC and the Railways to respond to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking arrangement for providing pedestrians an alternative mode for crossing over the railway lines after the Hancock bridge was demolished.
