The twin city of Kalyan and Dombivli has been witnessing several instances of crime in the last couple of months. So, for security measures police have decided to install CCTVs and proposed a budget of one crore. However, this move has not gone down well with residents.

Reason: They feel that this money can be better utilised for setting up of beat chowkeys.

Increasing crime in city has been a concern for cops and hence to keep a tab on crime in city, deputy commissioner of police (crime) Thane, Parag Manere, had taken the decision to install the CCTVs a week ago.

Sources from the department have informed that it is not only a crore that is proposed for the project, in fact, an additional Rs20 lakh will be spent on surveying the areas where cameras are to be installed. Also, an additional Rs10 lakh is proposed for the mainteanace of the cameras.

Shreemant Raman, a resident said, "We are not against the installation of CCTVs, but we demand that some amount be spent on increasing vigilance in areas like Bail Bazar, Kalyan station area and Tilaknagar among others. Also, it will be good if they set up more beat chowkies to combat crime."

Residents allege that most of the times huge amount is sanctioned for safety and security, but the projects never see the light of the day. Earlier too, Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) had given a contract of Rs23 crore for concretisation and road repairing work, but the result is yet to be seen. Residents object that there is no official available to update them on the progress of the projects. This time too, the residents fear that the CCTV project might face the same fate.

"CCTVs would definitely be a deterrent for criminals, but we have every right to know whether the money is spent judiciously and other requirements of increasing vigil is also taken care of," said Atul Mohan, another local.

Manere shared, "Transparency would be maintained in the installation and maintenance of cameras and we will also increase the vigil in sensitive areas." He added that the cameras will be helpful in nabbing criminals and will act as their ear and eyes.
