The Cuffe Parade Residents Association (CPRA) have declared war on the use of plastic in their locality. They have taken it upon themselves to ensure that plastic bags are not used by shops in the area. The CPRA have taken the shopkeepers into confidence and provided them with paper and cloth bags. The shopkeepers will hand over cloth bags to residents after charging them a security fee which will be refunded once the bag is given back.

Members of CPRA are currently carrying out a 'Plastic Free Cuffe Parade' programme in association with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Moreover, the residents are also pitching for zero waste generation and are promoting recycling of waste. The CPRA waste management team along with the BMC officials and local corporator, on Monday launched the program. The CPRA members will visit various buildings in the Cuffe Parade area to sensitise the locals about their program.

"We have spoken to the retailers to ban the use of plastic completely. We have also handed over to them paper and cloth bags which will be given to customers with a nominal deposit fee. The money will be refunded when the customer returns the bag," said Hansu Pardiwala, member of CPRA.

Vijay Bhimrajka, President of CPRA, said, "We are aiming for a plastic-free society, and we are getting a good response from the local residents."
