The Naupada building collapse in August last year brought to the fore the question of rehabilitation of those who still continue to stay in dilapidated and dangerous buildings. Most residents staying in such structures are risking their lives as they do not want to move to a rehabilitation centre provided by the authorities that is far from their home. So, 1,658 homes have been made available by the MMRDA to the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).

There are over 2,566 dangerous buildings in Thane city and in most buildings, residents refuse to vacate to far-off places as it will make travelling to schools, colleges and offices a tiresome task. "Going to a far-off place means schools, colleges and offices, which are near for these residents, will be far and they will have to travel," said MLA Sanjay Kelkar.

"The entire family gets dislocated, which also disturbs their routine life. Hence, they requested me if they could find an alternate accommodation nearby," he said. Moreover, finding an alternate accommodation near their place of residence means shelling out exorbitant rentals and most of them are reluctant to move to TMC's Dosti Plaza at Vartaknagar because of its distant location.

"For such residents of Naupada MMRDA has built 1658 homes. Most of these in neighboring areas of Naupada and will lessen the hardships to those shifting there," said the official.

These houses have been built by Chheda Enterprises, M/s Friends developers, Majestic premises. The keys to some of the flats at old Vaitiwadi, Naupada were handed over to the residents today.

"These accommodations have been built to house those staying in dangerous buildings so that they move to safety," said Sandeep Malvi, PRO, TMC
