People residing between Kishore Kumar Marg and Juhu Tara Road in Santa Cruz (W) will meet Satyanarayan Chaudhary, deputy commissioner of police (zone IX) face-to-face on May 9 at Vidyanidhi High School in Juhu to sort out the issue of drug peddling and other law and order problems. BJP MLA Ameet Satam has organised the meet so that residents can directly interact with the DCP and get first hand information of the action police will take in the coming days.

"Though we have achieved success of up to 70% in controlling the drug network in the area, the remaining 30% certainly needs to be addressed as well, so that it doesn't spread again," said Satam, who has been keeping track of the daily issues in the area.

In its April 26 edition, dna reported about how Juhu beach has turned into a den for drug peddlers, and how squatters, with the help of Nigerian nationals, are dealing drugs. Following the report, police swung into action, by increasing the patrolling.

Satam said that he has taken rounds of the beach and asked his officers to take action whenever they get a tip-off. Also, Mumbai police chief Rakesh Maria has ordered his officers to take stringent action against the peddlers.

However, being half successful doesn't cut it. "We have to ensure that residents feel safe in the area. Since the past few months, drug activity in the area has been intense. The squatters had taken over almost all the footpaths and erected their shanties, and were visited by Nigerians, who also started staying in the slums to make the drug business easy," Satam added.

Satam was approached by the residents, who requested him to evict the squatters. "I built a police chowky from the MLA funds, which addressed two problems at a time. One, the police did not have a chowky there, and hence there was no dedicated staff; the other was that the presence of the police have deterred drug dealers."

However, drug dealers and squatters have moved from that road to another and have now encroached on the beach, informed Satam, adding that the DCP has given clear orders to his officers.
