Rahmat Manzil apartment in Nagaon area was completely engulfed in flames after the powerloom unit on the first floor caught fire apparently due to short circuit. Thane police will investigate the cause of the fire.

Residents living on the second, third and fourth were evacuated by fire brigade officials after the smoke and fire reached the second floor as it became impossible for residents to come down from the staircase.

"We were afraid as every floor had smoke and people were suffocating due to heat. As time passed, the heat and smoke increased which led residents to panic. They broke open the grille and reached at the terrace," said Taher Ansari, a resident of third floor.

"After the evacuation, the fire was doused completely. Many have left for their relatives' residence, but we fear that thieves will take this as an opportunity and break open the doors as there is no electricity in the entire building," said Jaba Bhai, a first-floor resident.

"We have decided to stay back and keep a watch on the entire floor, as we cannot go inside due to smoke and heat," he added.
