Pre-monsoon showers have already hit the city, and an early monsoon is predicted this year. However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is yet to complete its pre-monsoon activities, primarily nullah desilting and road repairs, for which the initial deadline was May 15. It has now been extended to May 31.

With barely a fortnight left for the revised deadline, the civic body has almost 40 per cent desilting work pending, and road repairs on 454 roads are still in progress. The Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road is one of the 454 roads on which pre-monsoon repairs are yet to be completed. The road, which connects the Eastern Urban Road to Navi Mumbai sees heavy traffic during peak hours, while during heavy rainfall, the road witnesses at least one feet of water logging.

Taking into account the ever-increasing traffic, BMC decided to expand the road. The engineering department of BMC began the road work couple of months ago eyeing a deadline of May 15. However, the work has been delayed as contractors have cited lack of raw materials due to quarries in Navi Mumbai being shut, as an excuse. But commuters fear that if the work is not completed before the monsoon sets in, water logging cannot be prevented.

The Deputy Chief Engineer (Roads), Vivek Kalyankar said, “I visited the site on Tuesday morning. Some work is still pending, which we will be completed in the next 15 days”.

Civic activist Rajkumar Sharma said, “The slope is improper and there is no outlet for rain water. Thus, when it rains continuously, water gets accumulated towards the right lane creating traffic congestion. To expand the road, BMC has cut down the service road, which is causing extreme traffic congestion on Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road.”
