In a major relief to the BMC, the Supreme Court has stayed the National Green Tribunal's (NGT) decision of imposing a Rs 5 crore fine on the civic body for dumping construction debris in the Deonar dumping ground. The tribunal also asked the civic body to deposit a bank guarantee of Rs 100 crore. Both orders have been stayed by the apex court.

In October last year, the NGT had imposed a Rs 5 crore fine on the BMC for damaging the environment and for not carrying out proper waste management in the city. The tribunal had taken the decision after inspecting the dumping ground.

As per the NGT order, the BMC didn't follow solid waste management rules at any of the three dumping grounds.

In October last year, the NGT had directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) after a complaint was filed alleging that illegal dumping of waste was taking place at Deonar and two other dumping grounds without following SWM rules.
