A 55-year-old tribal man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his 75-year-old mother to death and later burying the body in their hut in Saphale, located about 100km from Mumbai.
Somarya Vedga, an alcoholic who was jobless, killed Laxmi on Monday as she refused him money to buy alcohol, said assistant police inspector Hemant Patil of Saphale police station.
Laxmi lived with Somarya and her younger son, Baban, 40, who was out of town when the incident took place.
A widow, Laxmi received monthly government pension of Rs 600. On Monday, Somarya badgered her to shell out money. As she refused, the two duo got into a fight. “As matters turned ugly, a livid Somarya grabbed a knife and stabbed Laxmi and then smothered her,” said Patil.
Later, as Somarya’s stupor wore off and he realised what he had done, he buried the body, said another police official.
The matter came to light on Tuesday when Baban returned home. “Somarya told Baban that their mother had died after a fall,” the official said, adding that Baban suspected something amiss and alerted the police.
“When we grilled Somarya, he showed us where he had buried the body,” said Patil. Laxmi’s body was exhumed after the police sought permission from the Palghar executive magistrate.
“Somarya, who has been arrested for murder and destruction of evidence, has been sent to custody for a week,” said Patil.
