In an incident which could make it difficult for anyone to fathom out the intention, an intoxicated 30-year-old man killed a 10-year-old son of his neighbour by throwing him down from the terrace of their five-storey building in Diva on Monday night. The reason: Rahul Chavan refused to go down and buy a bottle of alcohol for Kiran Tambe, a resident of Fasubai Apartment at Dativali Road in Diva, Thane.
Before forcibly taking Rahul to the terrace, Tambe first banged his head on the grill, attacked the boy with a knife and cut his hands. The boy then managed to slip out of Tambe’s grip, but the aggressor caught hold of him again and slit his throat. When Rahul began to bleed profusely, Tambe picked him up and threw him down from the terrace.
The boy came hurtling down and hit an electric pole. The impact was so strong that the pole got bent and the boy landed with a terrific thud and died.
Passers by and locals rushed Rahul to a nearby hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival. Tambe has been arrested.
According to the police, the incident took place around 8pm on January 20. Tambe was engaged in a quarrel with his wife. At that moment, Rahul came out of his residence. Tambe saw the boy and asked him to go out and get a bottle of alcohol for him. When Rahul told him that his parents would not approve of it, Tambe scolded asked him again. When Rahul said no for a second time, Tambe got infuriated and took him to the terrace.
Sunita Mourya, 32, a resident of the building, said: “Tambe is an incorrigible wife-beater. He used to beat his wife with belts and wire. A day before this incident, when he was beating his wife badly, the Chavan family had rushed to their house to stop Tambe. The next day, when I saw Tambe and Rahul talking in the corridor, I thought they were discussing about the previous day’s incident. I came out after I heard a big sound and saw that the boy with whom my daughter was playing a little while ago was lying dead on the ground floor. I got scared and asked my children to stay in.”
According to neighbours, Tambe is the second husband of his wife. They have two children.
Tambe often got drunk and abused his family members in the common corridor. He is a loner and hardly talked to other residents in the building.
Rahul was the elder of the two sons of his parents.
“We have arrested the accused and sent him for a medical test. He has been booked under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. We are investigating the case. We will soon call the members of Tambe’s family and his neighbours to record their statements,” said a police officer from Mumbra police station.
