The alleged Maoist plot to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi just got bigger — Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, too, has supposedly received two letters threatening violence against him and his family, allegedly from the Maoist organisations. These letters were sent to CM's office in the wake of recent anti-Naxal operations carried out by the police in Gadchiroli district. The letters have been handed over to the police for further investigations.

Pune police on Thursday claimed to have intercepted an internal communication among Maoists which talks about a plan to assassinate the PM in a 'Rajiv Gandhi-type incident'. The letter, found by the police when they searched Left-wing activist Rona Wilson's house in Delhi, refers to the requirement of Rs 8 crore to procure M-4 rifle and four lakh rounds for the killing.

Activist Sudhir Dhawale, advocate Surendra Gadling, activists Mahesh Raut, Shoma Sen and Wilson were arrested from Mumbai, Nagpur and Delhi.

They were booked in connection with the Elgaar Parishad held in Pune in December and the subsequent Bhima-Koregaon violence in the district.

On Friday, Pune police claimed to have found another letter, allegedly written by Milind Teltumbde (core member of banned outfit CPI (Maoist), congratulating lawyer Surendra Gadling for providing legal aid to Maoists.

The same letter mentions that Gadling has also been given the responsibility of providing the plan to jungle comrades to carry out even 'larger actions'.

Fadnavis said the Naxalism is no longer limited to jungles or rural areas, and is also spreading in urban areas. "Several instances of internal communications among Naxals about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's assassination have been found and more evidence is being recovered. We should allow the police to investigate the matter. I can give more details only after that," he said.

Maharashtra minister of state for home Deepak Kesarkar said the government was well-equipped to foil attempts by Left-Wing Extremists to retaliate.
