Recalibration of auto-taxi meters begins

Starting Friday, recalibration of auto rickshaw and taxi meters has begun so that proposed higher fares can be levied.

Sanjay Pandey, Controller of Legal Metrology Department, inaugurated the recalibration of meters of auto rickshaws and taxis.

From the coming week, Mumbaikars will start paying higher fares to the vehicles whose meters have been recalibrated.

Minimum fare for the initial 1.5km has been increased by a rupee for autos and taxis. Therefore, the minimum fare will now stand at Rs18 and Rs22 respectively for autos and taxis.

The legal metrology department has announced a helpline for commuters to lodge complaints about rigging of meters. Apart from that, commuters can also lodge complaints with the traffic police, who have been taking action against the erring drivers or vehicle owners.

It will take around a month to complete the process of recalibration of all the taxis and autos in the city.
