Punching holes in the claims made by BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi that Gujarat had overtaken Maharashtra as far as industrialization and investments are concerned,  state industries minister Narayan Rane furnished Reserve Bank of India (RBI) numbers to demolish Modi’s claims.

He also took a dig at the latter saying, “Modi leads in speaking lies.”

“The RBI figures are before you. Maharashtra is way ahead of Gujarat in industrialisation and in getting investments. The only thing in which Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi is in the forefront is speaking lies and misleading people, and we cannot do anything about it,” said Rane, after inaugurating the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation office in Khanda Colony in Panvel on Monday.

Rane also did not mince words while targeting NCP leader Vinayak Mete, who is spearheading the campaign for Maratha reservation. A committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of Rane, to study reservation for the Maratha community.

Rane said, “Mete is a self-appointed leader of the Maratha community. No one has appointed him to represent them. The report on the reservation or Marathas will be coming out in February. Such decisions cannot be taken in haste. If a decision is arrived at and tomorrow the court overturns it, then what can be done?”

The minister said, “A detailed report on reservation for the Maratha community will be presented to the state government in February.”

Earlier, on Sunday, Rane, who attended the closing ceremony of Aagri-Koli Mahotsav, said, “The Aagri-Koli community constitutes a major chunk of the population in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Raigad belt. This community has parted with their land for the development of the city.
However, due to lack of proper leadership, the members continue to reel under poverty.”
