Shiv Sena leader and minister of state for housing and higher education Ravindra Waikar is set to face a Maharashtra Lokayukta inquiry.

Mumbai Congress cheif Sanjay Nirupam, who had last week alleged that a Waikar-controlled trust has grabbed a prime piece of land in Aarey Colony and built an illegal floor in a gymnasium, approached the Lokayukta office on Monday to formally lodge his complaint.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has already sought a report in the matter.

"The case would be taken up as per the procedure. Notices to the Mhada and Aarey Colony chiefs will be issued on Tuesday seeking their response within a week," said a highly placed official at Lokayukta.

Waikar, who is the Shiv Sena MLA from Jogeshwari (East), has refuted the charges earlier.

Nirupam has alleged that while the trust, Shivsamarth Shikshan Prasarak Sanstha, controlled by his family members, was granted a 3,500 sqft plot, it encroached upon over 20 acres of surrounding land. The land was sought for construction of a gym on the ground floor from the local area development fund at the disposal of a legislator.

Rules for utilisation of MLA fund stipulate that the organisation must be registered with the state charity commissioner and that no family member of the MLA should be its office-bearer.

"But Waikar flouted all rules and misused his official position to grab the government land," said Nirupam claiming that he had obtained the relevant documents under the RTI Act.

Lokayukta has earlier given clean chit to Eknath Khadse, the former revenue minister in the Fadnavis government in the Rs30-crore bribery case. Khadse was forced to step down in another case of alleged MIDC land grab.

The Congress had also raised the issue of personal secretary of another Sena minister, Deepak Sawant, speaking inappropriately to a woman medical officer. The secretary, Sunil Mali, has been booked for sexual harassment.
