The city crime branch which is probing the extortion syndicate of gangster Ravi Pujari, suspects that gang members held from Dombivli were using satellite phones to communicate with the fugitive gangster, who operates from abroad. In the past six months, the duo had sent Rs15 lakh extortion money to Pujari through a Nashik-based hawala operator to Dubai from where the amount finally reached Pujari, police sources said.

The crime banch on Monday arrested Dombivli residents Dayanand Jatan, 48, and Bipin Patil, 37, for their alleged involvement with the Pujari gang.

"We have concrete information that Patil, who has several wine shops in Dombivli, had at least three satellite phones in his possession. We have not yet recovered them so far," said a crime branch source.

Union home ministry has barred usage of satellite phones in India. "Only government officials involved in special assignments are allowed to use satellite phones. It is operated through satellite and it is very difficult to trace the location of a person using satellite phones," said a police officer.

Patil's family owns around eight wine shops in Dombivli. Patil is ambitious and is addicted to lead a lavish lifestyle, police says. Patil wanted to spread his wine business in the Dombivli area and in order to create terror among his rivals, used to provide their details to Jatan, who in turn used to provide them to Pujari.
