In his complaint, Abdi, who has sought police protection, said he has been working as Modi's general counsel and attending to his legal matters in India.
Lalit Modi's lawyer Mehmood Abdi has filed a complaint at Oshiwara police station regarding an alleged threat call from fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari. Pujari is said to have warned Abdi to stay away from all cases involving the former chairman of the Indian Premier League that he (Abdi) was looking into. The Anti-Extortion Cell of Mumbai crime branch has initiated a probe into the matter.
In his complaint, Abdi, who has sought police protection, said he has been working as Modi's general counsel and attending to his legal matters in India.
"On Sunday around 2.17pm, I received a call on my mobile phone from an unknown international number. The caller identified himself as Ravi Pujari and claimed he was speaking from Australia," Abdi stated in his complaint.
According to Abdi, Pujari wanted him to desist from attending to Modi's matters. "The caller asked why I am defending him. I told him that I am doing my duty as his legal counsel. The caller then went on to say that he had bumped off a lawyer in Bengaluru. He threatened me to stop looking into Modi's matters, or he would harm me and my family," Abdi's complaint read.
He told the police that the caller informed him that his men already know where he (Abdi) lives and also have information about his family. "The caller wanted me to note down a telephone number, which I could not as I was driving. He told me that he will give me a number on which Modi should speak to him. The caller then said he would call me again and hung up," stated Abdi in his complaint.
"We are looking into the matter," said a crime branch officer.
