Three persons, including a minor and a senior citizen, suffered severe injuries after a gas leakage led to a blast in an apartment in Nalasopara (East) on Monday morning. The police have said that the leakage happened after the gas pipe was nibbled by rats.

The incident happened in the rented flat of one Popat Bangar in Pawan Apartment of Sankeshwar Nagar in Nalasopara. Bangar was out on work. When the odour of gas emanated from the closed flat, his neighbours Rekha Gupta (45), her daughter Jyoti (16) and Laxmi Harpal (70) tried to open the door to shut down the gas cylinder. However, as they were at it, the cylinder burst injuring them severely. The doors and window panes of the flat were damaged due to the blast.

"We suspect that rats had nibbled the gas pipe leading to the leakage. We have taken statements of the neighbours as well as the injured. The injured were rushed to a hospital," said a Tulinj police officer.

"We will register an offence on the occupant for negligence. We have asked the gas company to submit a report and are investigating the case further," said Bajirao Kalantre, senior inspector, Tulinj police station.
